State Tuition Assistance (STA)


The New Mexico National Guard Tuition Scholarship Program (NMNGTSP) is commonly known as State Tuition Assistance (STA).  The scholarship provides eligible members of the New Mexico National Guard an opportunity to complete up to a bachelor’s degree.  STA applies to students pursuing their first bachelor’s degree or below (no second equivalent or certificate level is allowed).  STA is paid directly to the school and is invoiced after the term’s Last Day to Drop a Class without a W grade (100% refund).  The Air National Guard yearly cap is $8,000.  The Army National Guard yearly cap is $4,000.  STA fiscal year is from July 1 to June 30.  Please follow the NM STA Application Checklist.


 State Tuition Assistance Deadlines:

  • Fall Semester – July 15th
  • Spring Semester – December 1st
  • Summer Semester – May 1st

Documents Needed

Please send the following documents to the State TA Education Office:

- AGONMJC 2171-R State Tuition Assistance application (CAC Signature Required)
- Student Schedule - available in your myNMSU account
- Account Detail For Term - available in your myNMSU account
- AGONMJC 2171-R application form must be digitally signed by the soldier and their commander via CAC ONLY.  Completed applications can be emailed to the education office as an original document.  Manual handwritten is no longer authorized.

Exception to Policy (ETP) Waivers

If you submit the NMNGTSP–STA Application after the deadline, in addition to the documents needed, you must also submit an Exception to Policy (ETP) Waiver.  Please follow the ETP Waivers (Appendix A and Appendix B) Templates for assistance.  The Unit Commander must endorse the request for an ETP (Appendix B) before AGONMJC Form 2171-R is submitted to the ESO.  All ETPs must be submitted within 30 days from the start date of the course for which the ETP is being applied.
