Advance payment provides funds at the beginning of a school term to help the student meet expenses concentrated at the beginning of the term. Advance payment is the amount payable for the initial month or portion of a month the quarter or semester begins plus the amount payable for the following month. Advance pay requests should be submitted 30 to 120 days before the begin date.
Students are eligible for advance payment when
- The student requests advance pay, and
- There’s more than 30 days between terms and break pay won’t be paid, and
- The student is enrolled at least half-time, and
- VA receives the advance payment request at least 30 days but not more that 120 days before the enrollment period.
An advance will pay the first and second month. The first month may be a partial month, with payment pro-rated for the number of days attended that month. Advance pay for a student certified 8/22/09 through 12/14/09 would pay 8/22/09 through 9/30/09.
Since VA normally pays after a month is completed, the student would not receive another check until November, when payment for October is made.
