How You Can Help Create a Supportive Campus for Our Student Veterans

Our NMSU community is becoming increasingly aware of the unique challenges facing our returning student veteran population, and the negative impact it has on their health and academic performance.

To address this concern, we have adopted an online training simulation that will assist faculty and staff to better support our veteran students. Veterans on Campus is a 30-minute online, interactive training simulation that utilizes the latest innovations and research in game technology, virtual humans, neuroscience, and adult learning theory to provide a highly-engaging and effective learning experience. The course is accessible 24/7 from any computer with Internet access. Learners can complete the training in multiple sittings. After completing the training, faculty and staff will be better equipped to do the following:

  • Understand common challenges facing student veterans transitioning to campus life
  • Manage a classroom discussion around issues sensitive to veterans
  • Identify and approach a student veteran exhibiting signs of post-deployment stress and, if necessary, refer them to on- and off-campus support services
  • Recognize common indicators of post-deployment stress, including signs of PTSD, depression, suicidal ideation, and
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
